In response to the Paris Agreement in 2015 and Special Report on Global Warming, published in October 2018, the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) called for limiting global warming to 1.5°C. The IPCC recommended all industry sectors to achieve net zero human-caused carbon emissions by 2050.
Since 2021, ACI and Air Transport Action Group (ATAG), representing key aviation industry stakeholders and ICAO, representing national governments, have subsequently pledged to achieve Net zero carbon by 2050.

Airports in the region are working towards exploring potential pathways towards net zero by implementing energy-efficiency measures, including switching fuel for on-site thermal and sustainable electrical applications and on-site sustainable power generation initiatives, negative emissions technologies / carbon removal and addressing Scope 3 carbon emissions (emissions controlled by others), most of which will need funding from government and financial institution.

This workshop will explore how airports should

• Set long-term carbon goal for airports
• Develop roadmap to reach Net Zero Carbon Emission
• Address Scope 3 emission (both upstream and downstream)
• Obtain State and Green Finance for airport decarbonisation

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused enormous challenges to airport operations. Numerous health-related measures such as social distancing, terminal closure, and COVID testing were imposed upon airports and led to significant impacts on passenger flow and experience.

As the industry continues to recover, airports are also gradually returning to normalcy. However, in all likelihood, another pandemic will come again, sooner or later. Airports should learn from experience and start planning ahead to minimise disruptions to the extent possible.

This panel will discuss key lessons learnt of the COVID-19 pandemic from the perspective of airport operations and how the industry can enhance crisis management and operational preparedness for similar public health crises in the future.

Interview with the expert: China’s Impact on the Region and the World

Before the onset of the pandemic, China accounted for the region’s 40% of passenger traffic. However, China’s COVID policies limited the supply and demand in traffic to and from the country in the past three years. China’s relaxation of travel restrictions in the beginning of January certainly served as a positive factor in recovery. However, the impacts have yet to be realised due to capacity constraints, industry supply-side bottleneck and re-implementation of travel restrictions in some markets.

Nonetheless, it is forecasted that China’s contributions to the global passenger traffic growth is unparalleled in the long run. ACI estimated that in the next two decades, China will account for 16% of the total passenger traffic growth -- highest among other countries and equivalent to 2.5 billion, followed by USA with 2.2 billion additional passengers expected by 2040.

This session is dedicated to discussing both strengths and opportunities presented by the biggest aviation market as well as weaknesses and threats that may have potential drawbacks. Our guest speakers will leverage their expertise and enlighten the audience about China’s impacts on the region and the world from the air transportation point of view.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated full-scale transportation crisis led to significant cuts in air services, with many routes suspended until indefinite period of time, the remaining routes significantly downsized in terms of frequencies and/or capacities. In many instances, only few selected lifeline routes retained for humanitarian purposes.
As the industry is gradually recovering from the adverse impacts of the pandemic, at an uneven pace across the vast region represented by ACI Asia-Pacific, the connectivity aspect of the industry in the aftermath of the pandemic, remains unclear.

Monitoring closely the recovery of the industry and advocating for its member airports’ interests.
ACI Asia-Pacific commissioned PwC to conduct a study – “Airport Industry Connectivity Study in Asia-Pacific and Middle East” to evaluate:

• Industry connectivity trends before and after the COVID-19 pandemic
• The recovery prospects and forecast of connectivity
• Identification of major connectivity gaps and opportunities
• Analyses with respect to links between air connectivity and social and economic impacts.

In this session, we will hear from PwC about the key findings of this important study. In addition, industry leaders in the panel will provide insights on the opportunities and challenges in the short and medium term that associate with the recovery and development of air connectivity.

The significant drop in passenger volumes due to the COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe financial challenges to airport operators and other stakeholders in the aviation ecosystem, including those that provide services such as security, ground handling and airport commercial services.

As the pandemic subsides and borders reopen, we begin to turn the page to the post-COVID-era. Practically, all aviation stakeholders are setting their sights to the next frontier, and searching for better and more sustainable solutions for air transportation.

ACI forecast that global passenger traffic will grow by an average rate of 8.7% per year over the next two decades. The projection indicates that nearly 19.7 billion passengers will traverse the world’s airports by 2040 – more than double the 2019 air passenger levels.

Investments in brand new airports, also known as greenfield airports, are inevitable, particularly where the existing infrastructure cannot accommodate growing traffic volumes. In fact, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East account for 87% (USD 633 billion) of the global capital expenditure needs for greenfield airports between 2021 and 2040, testifying the significance of greenfield airports for the upcoming decades.

Aspired to align with industry and national sustainability targets, particularly decarbonisation goals, many investors are pursuing infrastructure designs to countervail climate change consequences and other challenges of the environment.

This session will feature some of the most high-profile greenfield airport developments in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East, focusing particularly on their sustainability plans, economic and social benefits they provide.
