The implication of COVID-19 pandemic on aviation has been overwhelmingly deep. The pandemic wiped out billions of dollars in revenues, cost millions of jobs, and profoundly altered passenger behaviour overnight.

As we move beyond the pandemic, airports are facing a variety of hurdles in their pursuit to make the industry future-ready. Airport operators are looking at innovative solutions, including the deployment of innovative technologies to cater to the rapidly-evolving consumer needs in the post-pandemic era.

Our industry is exploring innovative solutions that will enable them to become more efficient, reduce costs, deal with evolving workforce challenges and find new revenues, while ensuring security and safety.

This session will focus on how Airports weathered the challenges, and how to build a smart and future-ready ecosystem.

Before the onset of the pandemic, China accounted for the region’s 40% of passenger traffic. However, China’s COVID policies limited the supply and demand in traffic to and from the country in the past three years. China’s relaxation of travel restrictions in the beginning of January certainly served as a positive factor in recovery. However, the impacts have yet to be realised due to capacity constraints, industry supply-side bottleneck and re-implementation of travel restrictions in some markets.

Nonetheless, it is forecasted that China’s contributions to the global passenger traffic growth is unparalleled in the long run. ACI estimated that in the next two decades, China will account for 16% of the total passenger traffic growth -- highest among other countries and equivalent to 2.5 billion, followed by USA with 2.2 billion additional passengers expected by 2040.

This session is dedicated to discussing both strengths and opportunities presented by the biggest aviation market as well as weaknesses and threats that may have potential drawbacks. Our guest speakers will leverage their expertise and enlighten the audience about China’s impacts on the region and the world from the air transportation point of view.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the associated full-scale transportation crisis led to significant cuts in air services, with many routes suspended until indefinite period of time, the remaining routes significantly downsized in terms of frequencies and/or capacities. In many instances, only few selected lifeline routes retained for humanitarian purposes.
As the industry is gradually recovering from the adverse impacts of the pandemic, at an uneven pace across the vast region represented by ACI Asia-Pacific, the connectivity aspect of the industry in the aftermath of the pandemic, remains unclear.

Monitoring closely the recovery of the industry and advocating for its member airports’ interests.
ACI Asia-Pacific commissioned PwC to conduct a study – “Airport Industry Connectivity Study in Asia-Pacific and Middle East” to evaluate:

• Industry connectivity trends before and after the COVID-19 pandemic
• The recovery prospects and forecast of connectivity
• Identification of major connectivity gaps and opportunities
• Analyses with respect to links between air connectivity and social and economic impacts.

In this session, we will hear from PwC about the key findings of this important study. In addition, industry leaders in the panel will provide insights on the opportunities and challenges in the short and medium term that associate with the recovery and development of air connectivity.

Small and regional airports are an intrinsic part of the air transport system. They represent not only as points of access to remote locations, but also serve as key driver to social and economic development of the surrounding region. Many of them, which had been heavily dependent on tourism and passenger traffic, were hit particularly hard during the COVID-19 pandemic.
